Did you know that your skin is the largest organ in your body? It breathes, excretes, absorbs and protects. Imagine that your skin is a huge, waterproof, leak proof but permeable, super-stretchable sack that keeps your insides in and the environment and germs out. It is subjected to heat, cold, rain, bacteria, sun and chemical and environmental pollution.

It is your largest erogenous zone, responsive to touch and temperature. Rich in nerve endings and touch receptors, the skin transmits sensations of pleasure and in to the brain, which, over time, are etched into the map of your face.

When you take care of your skin, keep it clean, nourish it, and pamper it, it will respond with gratitude!

Relaxation. Tranquility. Serenity.

Nutrition for a Happy and Healthy Mind

You know the old expression “You are what you eat”?  Not surprisingly, this is a very accurate statement because nutrition plays a pivotal role in an individual’s overall personal well-being.
Eating a balanced diet and integrating regular physical activity can help you to feel better on the inside and look better on the outside.  It can also impact the mind as well.  So, what foods and nutrition practices help to benefit the mind?

Restrictive diets low in fat and/or carbohydrates can make you feel chronically depressed and fatigued.  A balanced diet for most individuals is one that consists of about 25-30% fat; 50-60% carbohydrate; and 15-20% protein content.
Carbohydrate cravings may be a form of subconscious attempts to raise serotonin levels in the brain.  Serotonin is a chemical in the brain converted from the amino acid tryptophan and is responsible for mood, sleep and appetite control.  After eating a carbohydrate- dense meal, tryptophan is absorbed more quickly into the blood stream.  Trytophan can be found in turkey, chicken, fish, beans and lentils and since it is a mood enhancer, it can give a drowsy effect due to the increase in serotonin levels.

To avoid mood swings and energy highs and lows, choosing carbohydrates that are slow digesting such as whole grains, fruits, and vegetables will help.  Eating whole grains will also ward off hunger for longer periods of time since it keeps you fuller longer.  Consistent exercise has been shown to increase endorphin levels in the brain, acting as a natural anti-depressant.  Consuming chocolate also releases endorphins promoting the same effect.  It is important to be wise and only eat chocolate in moderation to prevent eating an excessive amount of calories, fat and sugar.

So, make sure to get a variety in your diet because different foods have a different impact on the brain and mind.  Eating a balanced diet coupled with regular physical activity has many benefits that will keep you feeling better on the inside, but also helping you to look better on the outside.
